There is a massive amount of stuff about Tarifa ('The Windy City') on the net. Many of the locals don't speak English (a good sign of it not being too over developed) - so to practice some basic Spanish phrases - click here (BBC) or  why not take a course while you are there  - you can book lessons with Hispalense in Tarifa itself.

Here are a few other Tarifa related links you may find useful:
  • www.stoked-publications.com - A well researched guide to the best surf spots in Europe including Tarifa plus a World Guide.  It has a useful wind forecast page that links to the current Windguru and Windy forecasts for all the best spots across Europe.
  • Tarifa Services & Phone Numbers -  here are some very useful numbers for local Tarifa services including Emergencies, Pharmacies, Doctor, Dentist and Consulates (courtesy of CostaSur.com).
  • San Mateo Church - This beautiful old church is a must see - but please respect the local congregation and services. It's at the bottom of the old town on the main street with lots of bars and shops to visit afterwards.
  • La Residencia Hotel & Spa - An impressive addition to Tarifa port.  This Moorish inspired purpose built four star hotel and spa is part of the ongoing upgrade of the fishing harbour area.
  • Altrove (Plaza de la Paz) - This quaint shop down in the old town offers gifts, clothes, statues, fabrics, beads and jewellery from World, African, Italian and European trade cultures.

Megapuerto - No Gracias! (Video)

We already have an efficient and sizable commercial port in Tarifa.  A few years ago, the Algeciras authorities were proposing a major new development that would destroy the views from the old town ramparts and introduce a huge increase in commercial traffic through this small town.  It would also put at risk marine and other wild life in one of the most special migration regions in Europe. It hasn't been built - so far!
